The first step towards maintaining your COSS competency is to gain a minimum of 4 work experience logbook entries leading up to the COSS workplace assessment. Your COSS assessor will contact you at least 24 hours prior to the COSS workplace assessment taking place. Please book your COSS assessment well in advance of expiry to avoid losing your competence as there is no grace period from Sentinel for workplace assessments.
Your Railway Medical needs to be in date with a current Drug and Alcohol test. If you change Employer/Sponsor you will need to take a new Drug and Alcohol test, contacts us to book an appointment prior to attending your COSS workplace assessment or book online.

What you're Assessed on for your COSS Workplace Assessment:
The COSS Interim workplace assessment consists of theory and practical elements including;
- COSS underpinning knowledge
- Implementing a Safe System of Work
- Safety-Critical Communications
- COSS Safety Briefing
- SWP Verification
- OLP/CRP Permits
On successful completion of the COSS Interim workplace assessment, you are free to perform the duties of a COSS anywhere on the Network Rail Managed Infrastructure including Infrastructure Projects.
How to Pass your COSS Workplace Assessment:
Throughout the COSS Interim workplace assessment there are a series of verbal and practical assessments, we can provide additional learning support if required. We recommend you study the COSS Key point card and take the COSS mock test leading up to your COSS Interim workplace assessment. The pass rate at the centre for the COSS workplace assessments is 95%.
On successful completion of your 9-15 month interim COSS assessment You will need to complete a minimum of 4 work experience log book entries and attend a COSS Recertification Course leading up to the 2 year expiry date.
Your Assessor will contact you to confirm all arrangements prior to the COSS assessment.
PTS card holders including COSS’s range from all types of construction workers including trackworkers, tradespeople, Scaffolders, Engineers, and Surveyors.
