To maintain your Safe Work Leader 1 competency, preferably attend an SWL 1 Refresher Test leading up to the expiry date. However, you are eligible to complete the SWL 1 Refresher test provided your competency has expired by no more than eight weeks. Your Railway Medical needs to be in date with a current Drug and Alcohol test. If you change Employer/Sponsor you will need to take a new Drug and Alcohol test, contact us to book an appointment prior to attending your course or book online.
Provided you meet the requirements above you can attend SWL 1 Refresher Test on your chosen date.
In the case of being more than eight weeks from expiry, you will need to attend a 3-day SWL 1 training course.

The Safe Work Leader Refresher Test consists of a computer theory exam, the questions are based on the following elements:
- Understand the Safe Work Leader Competence
- Planning standard 019
- Non-Technical Skills of an SWL
- Effective Communication
- Hazard Identification
- SWL role in Safe Work Pack creation
On successful completion of the SWL 1 Refresher Test, you are free to perform the duties of a Safe Work Leader 1 anywhere on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure Projects. In the event you don’t manage to pass first time, you will need to wait a minimum period of 48 hours before you can try again.
How you Pass your SWL 1 Refresher Test:
We strongly recommend you revise the information contained in the planning standard 019 before attempting your Safe Work Leader Refresher Test. The pass rate at the centre for the SWL 1 Refresher Test is 90% and if you don't pass first time you can attend another SWL 1 Refresher Test free of charge!
The Safe Work Leader 1 qualification lasts for 3 years, you must hold a valid COSS competency to maintain your SWL 1 status, so make sure you don't forget about your COSS assessment and COSS refresher course. Provided you maintain your COSS competency you will be eligible for a Safe Work Leader 1 Refresher Test second time around, you will need to attend leading up to expiry to continue performing the duties of a Safe Work Leader 1.
