The SSOW Planner Course will cover all areas reagrding the creation of a Safe Work Pack (SWP). Through-out the course you will be expected to complete various exercises and assessments for different job types. However, there are 3 types of SSOW Planner Courses.
SSOW Planner Initial Course (4 Days)
This initial course is designed for individuals who have little experience regarding the rail infrastructre.
Because of this, you are expected to complete a SSOW Planner Pre-Qualifier Test before attending the course. Your sponsor will have to create an account for you on Rail Exams, which you will then have to log into and complete. These instructions will be emailed to you once you have booked onto the SSOW Planner Initial Course.
SSOW Planner Conversion Course (3 Days)
The Conversion Course has been adapted to suit individuals with previously gained experience of Safe Work Packs. To complete the 3 day Conversion Course you must currently hold a valid IWA or COSS competency.
SSOW Planner Re-Certification Course (2 Days)
The Re-Certification Course has been created for individuals who already hold the SSOW Planner and are wishing to renew their competence.

On successful completion of the SSOW Planner course, you are free to create SWP (Safe Work Packs) for anywhere on the Network Rail managed infrastructure including Infrastructure Projects, provided that you are being mentored by a competent Safe System of Work Planner. That is until you have completed your SSOW Planner Assessment, then you can created SWP's without being mentored.
How to Pass your SSOW Planner Course:
Throughout the SSOW Planner course, there are a series of written, practical and scenario assessments. The pass rate at the centre for the SSOWP course is 99% and if you don't pass the first time, you can attend another course free of charge! We have also porvided you with the relevant downloads for the SSOW Planne Course at the bottom of this page.
The SSOW Planner qualification lasts for three years, within 4 months you must create a minimum of 4 SWP's during the mentoring period. Provided your mentor has signed your work experience logbook, you're eligible for a post-mentoring SSOW Planner assessment. To maintain your SSOW Planner competency an additional interim assessment must be carried out between 15-21 months from the date of your course, You will need to attend the SSOWP Re-Certification Course leading up to your expiry.
